April PUG Meeting - Group Contract Opportunity

April PUG

Wednesday APRIL 1, 2009 at 6:00 PM

Location:
One Love Studio
437 Washington Street, 2nd Floor
New York, NY 10013

MAP

Take either the 1 or A, C, E line to Canal Street. Walk west along Canal Street to Hudson Street. You will be standing at the entrance of the Holland Tunnel. Cross diagonally (to the front of the Hudson Square Café) and immediately to the south you will see Desbrosses Street (this is the entrance to the Tribeca Rooftop as some of you will recognize). Walk two short blocks west along Desbrosses Street and turn left on Washington Street. 437 is the double doors 50 feet from the corner on the left side. The studio is on the second floor.

This sounds much more complicated than it actually is which is why I included the map above.

Also, for those who drive, there is ample parking throughout the neighborhood following 6:00 PM.

AGENDA: Contracts

One major topic of discussion in our group has been a need for a wedding photography contract that protects us in as many ways as possible. Over the years we have all had lessons learned from our experiences and have adapted our contracts accordingly. We now have the opportunity to collaborate with a lawyer who will combine all of our contracts into one that we may all use to our advantage and feel confident that we are protected. The more people that participate the less of an investment it will be for each individual. If you are interested please read further.

This is is how the lawyer, James F. Lightstone, described the project to me:

"I know that there are PUG members in need of legal assistance, especially concerning the review of form photography contracts. However, even in the best of times absorbing even my discounted small business hourly rate of $300/hr. represents an expense few (if any) PUG members can afford. And, of course, these are not the best of times. That's a shame, since your form contract is an investment for the rest of your career. I'd like to propose a way in which we can work together to make the per person fee low enough for you folks that it's a no-brainer investment for your respective businesses while, at the same time, making sure I'm fairly compensated.

"For a total fee of $5,000, I will review all the PUG member contracts given to me and produce a single, comprehensive recommended form for all members to use, combining the best of all the contracts and my 30 years of experience. I'll review each contract submitted by the initial group and meld the best concepts together for the master form. In addition, I anticipate creating some "Standard Variations" which will deal with unusual issues which people can feel free to include (or not) in their particular contracts. Obviously, the more people who participate, the more comprehensive the finished product will be and the lower the per person expense will be for PUG members. For example, should 25 PUG members choose to participate, each person will only have to contribute $200.

"Once I've finished, I'll email the form to all participating members. In addition, I'll create a Google Group where all participating members can post questions which may arise about the contract and where I'll post answers for all participating members to see. And, finally, for the next 12 months, I'll offer a special deeply-discounted rate of $100/hr. for any other related legal work of any PUG member who participated in the form contract project.

"If we work together in the manner I've just outlined, for a modest investment each participating PUG member will have a comprehensive, standard form contract for the most important legal document PUG members use and one which you'll each be able to use for years to come. And, of course, everyone will get the opportunity to have their questions answered on the Google Group, plus will have access to my services at a deeply-discounted hourly rate for other legal work over the next 12 months.

"I'm also attaching a copy of my professional bio for your reference.

"I hope we can work this out and I look forward to working with all of you.

Best,
Jamie"

Here's how it will work:
We anticipate that the cost will be between $150 to $250 per member, depending upon how may people participate. In order to tell you what the per person cost will be, we need to get a sense as soon as possible of how many people would like to participate. So please, if possible, send me an email at info@silkstudioweddings.com before the meeting ( April 1st) to let me know whether you're interested. Based on your responses to this email and our discussion at the meeting next Wednesday, we will let you know the per person cost at the meeting. If you're interested in participating, you'll email your current form contract and send your check directly to Jamie. He'll collect all the contracts and checks. The deadline will be April 15 (tax day so how can you forget?) and Jamie will let us know then whether enough people have agreed to participate to cover the $5,000 fee. If so, he'll move ahead with the project. If not, he'll return the checks to me and you'll get your money back. Don't worry if you'd like to participate but can't make the meeting. After the meeting I'll let you know what the cost is and give you Jamie's email and street addresses so you can send your form and check.

The following is a testimonial for Jamie:

"I have known Jamie for over 20 years. He is both my lawyer and computer consultant. I cannot recommend Jamie highly enough for his knowledge of the law, work ethic and ability to address and clarify any situation in a timely fashion. I believe Jamie will do a wonderful job evaluating our respective contracts. The outcome will be one solid, legal contract that will serve as the foundation for our individual contracts for the remainder of our careers as professional photographers." - Robin Langsdorf

I think this is a great opportunity for us, so, once again, please try to email me at info@silkstudioweddings.com before the meeting to let me know whether you're interested. I look forward to your participation and seeing you at the meeting.
